What to look for on a visit

The concrete things worth watching on a visit: the walls, specifics over platitudes, the student panel, an apples-to-apples class, and the small kindnesses.

Once you've made peace with the idea that a school's events are telling you the truth about itself, the question becomes practical: what, concretely, should you be looking at? Here are the things that have told us the most.

Read the walls

Walk the halls and look at what's hanging up. Is it student work, or glossy marketing? Is it alive, a little messy, full of the actual students who go there, or is it curated to impress visitors? The walls are one of the most honest things in a building, and they'll tell you quickly whether the place feels like your family's kind of place.

Listen for specifics over platitudes

In the big presentations, notice whether the school says anything you could actually disagree with. The best sign is when a school is specific enough that two thoughtful parenting adults sitting next to each other could walk out with different opinions of it. That means there's a real point of view in the room. When all you hear is "we challenge every student to reach their potential," you've learned nothing, and that's sometimes the intent. Vague language is how a school avoids telling you what it actually values.

Go to the student panels, and really listen

This is some of the best data you'll get, because students can't toe a company line the way administrators can. Listen to how they talk about their own school. One family we know sat in an early panel where a student proudly explained that the community was so tight that at midnight, finishing his homework, there was always someone else online to talk to. He meant it as a point of pride. For that family, it was an alarm bell, because they did not want their kid up doing homework at midnight. The school wasn't bad, just not theirs, and the panel told them so in a way no brochure ever would.

Compare apples to apples

Pick one academic area you know something about (math, writing, or science) and go to that same session at every school you visit. When you hear how each one talks about the same subject, the differences jump out: the language they use, how they structure it, what they seem to care about. It's far more revealing than comparing a math talk at one school to an art talk at another. It's also harder than it sounds, because the schedules fight you. Do it anyway.

Notice the small kindnesses

Are there snacks for a room full of hungry teenagers, or are the kids expected to white-knuckle a two-hour session? Are the snacks an afterthought at the very end, or something thoughtful offered throughout, and are they things kids will actually eat? Is the whole event so formal that you'd be embarrassed to get up and find a bathroom, or does it feel like a place a kid could exhale? These sound like trivia. They are not. They're a small window into how much a school thinks about the comfort of the people in its care.

None of these is a verdict on its own. But collect enough of them, across enough schools, and a real sense of each place emerges.
